Mikefolios (What is a Mikefolio?)

Mike Reed's gallery of recent work.

The pictures I draw now look a lot different from the ones that I drew in my first Big Chief drawing pad, but one thing is still the same; drawing isn't just making marks on paper, it's a way of thinking. As kid, it was way of thinking that routinely got me "does not use free time constructively" comments on my report card, but as an adult it has informed all of my work in film animation, commercial illustration, children's book illustration, journalism, teaching and training.

And it's how I make a living, so most of the images on this site can be purchased as original art, or as prints. Click on "Art for Sale" for info on availability, prices, and shipping.

Also, contact me to discuss commissions, projects and training seminars.

Lucia's restaurant

I don't know how a restaurant can keep crabby customers happy, mollify the health department and OSHA, prevent kitchen mutinies, and still serve up consistently great food.

Lucia manages to pull it off year after year. This sort of sorcery would have gotten her burned at the stake in 17th century Europe.

The Convincers

Werc Werk Works 2010

These drawings were done on the set of a film called, The Convincers, that was shot in the St. Paul train depot. The film, starring Greg Kinnear and Alan Arkan, is due for release this fall.

Robert Devereux

Minnesota Opera 2010

I tried a number of styles for this opera.

La Boheme

Duluth Festival Opera

This was definitely my most intense experience as an artist. I don't know if a similar performance will ever be repeated - I hope so (or some variant of it).

Casanova's Homecoming

Minnesota Opera 2009

This opera isn't for everyone - but is pretty funny in parts. Interesting but difficult music.

The Pearl Fishers

Pearl Fishers Sketchbook

Minnesota Opera 2009

It was a challenge to capture the constant movement and huge cast of characters - but seriously fun.

The Pearl Fishers

Minnesota Opera 2009

The MN Opera's production of Bizet's first opera, the Pearl Fishers, was a riot of bright colors, abstract set design, dancers, exotic costumes, and constant movement.
